201 Got T-Shirts?

Got T-Shirts

Debbie Haley
All-Day Class
$76

You’ve been saving all of those t-shirts of yours, the kids or grandkids, and have always wanted to make a t-shirt quilt someday. Well, someday is here. Let me help you get started. We will learn the basics of t-shirt quilt making and explore some of the various possibilities. Students need to bring 10 to 15 t-shirts, which we will then cut up, stabilize and arrange into a throw sized quilt with the option of making larger at a later time. We may not use them all at this time, but it will give you several to pick from. Please DO NOT cut anything out before class. I will be showing you the best way to do this to avoid any frustration. Pick shirts of various colors and with various copy sizes (left chest, full front and/or back, sleeves or wrap around). Half the fun is trying to fit them all together. I will share with you some of my tricks.

Class Tuition: $60
Supply Fee: $16 - includes approximately 4 yards of stabilizer and 4 yards of ¼” bias tape. Additional quantities will be available for purchase.
Supply List: Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Sewing machine with a ¼” foot and a zig-zag foot
  • Neutral and black thread
  • Dressmaker scissors (8”)
  • Rotary cutter and mat (at least 18x24)
  • Square rulers that you already have from 6 ½’ to 16 ½” (please do not buy any)
  • 1 yard of fabric for sashing or borders in any color you choose (solid or tone on tone works best)
  • Design wall and masking tape (a large piece of flannel or batting will work well for this.

*Please label your rulers that you bring as we may be sharing some of these with others.

203 Appliqué My Way

Appliqué My Way

Geannine Ott
All-Day Class
$70

Have you always wanted to learn traditional hand appliqué; or have you tried various needle-turn techniques and haven’t found success? Try a different turned technique using heat resistant “templar” plastic. Students will learn the techniques to start a Folk-Art style basket block that is the focal point of a small wall-hanging. Also covered in the class will be “Perfect Circles” and different bias stem techniques that may be used to complete the block. This is a wonderful technique that allows total portability once the block is prepared and can be modified for use with most appliqué patterns. In this full day class students will learn the above techniques and will start their basket block.

Class Tuition: $60
Supply Fee: $10 - includes templar, small glue bottle and metal tip, a sample of appliqué needles and pattern for wall hanging.
Supply List: Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • 24” ruler
  • Sewing pins
  • Small travel iron
  • Heavy Duty Spray Starch
  • Flat -  1/3”-1/2” paint brush – I prefer a soft brush
  • Elmer’s Washable School Glue (do not substitute)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Small craft scissors
  • Sharpie
  • Pencil
  • Fine thread to match fabric – silk 100 weight is wonderful if you have it; otherwise cotton – no thicker than 50 weight
  • Thread Heaven – thread conditioner
  • Hand quilting thread or heavy-weight thread for berries – any color
  • 4 quarters; 4 dimes, 4 nickels; 4 pennies or Karen Kay Buckley “Perfect Circles” (optional)
  • Cotton covered pressing surface at least 12” x 12”
  • 3/8” and 1/2” Clover bias tape makers (optional – will have a set available to use in class)

Fabric requirements: Good quality 100% cotton fabric

  • Fat Quarter of each – 6 to 8 various colors for flowers
  • 2-3 different fat quarters – green for bias stems & other appliqué
  • Fat quarter for basket (remaining fabric will be used in the border)
  • Background fabric – 1 piece 18 x 18 (a fat quarter will work) for the basket block - light or dark to contrast with your fabric above

204 Fun with Fusible Appliqué - Closed

Fusible Applique

Karen Kleespies Stone
All-Day Class
$60

Experience exciting ways to manipulate fabric while enjoying the immediacy of fusible techniques. Play around with possibilities using positive/negative images and discuss appropriate edge finishes. While impromptu design is encouraged, participants may choose from provided patterns. Featured quilts include Just Beachy, Hibiscus, Delirious, Prickly Pear, Indigo A-Go-Go, Little Thing and soon, San Antonio Rose.

Class Tuition: $60
Supply Fee: $0
Supply List: Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Sewing machine set up for decorative stitching
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Pencil and paper if you would like to design your own block
  • Paper-backed fusible web (Steam-A-Seam 2 is nice or Trans-Web)
  • Sharpie pen or pencil to write on fusible web backing
  • Scissors – really good ones.  How beautifully you cut will largely determine how well your project will turn out.  Bring the size(s) that you prefer for tight work (I like the Gingher 5” craft scissors for this)
  • Decorative threads – a variety for fun and remember dull needles don’t stitch very decoratively (standard 40-wt Rayon thread is great for this, and 30-wt is even better)
  • Tear-away stabilizer, water soluble stabilizer (generally too expensive), spray stabilizer (Sullivan’s) OR spray starch (inexpensive)

Fabric requirements:

  • Start with a background fabric that you love, that offers lots of possibility (By “background”, please do not assume “off white”, but a unifying “starting place” for your quilt, that will appear in every block.  OR, choose a group of fabrics that you’ll consider your backgrounds).  You will need a square of this “starting place” fabric for each block you make.  There are several block sizes to chose from, so DO NOT pre-cut!
  • Select and bring a minimum of eight fat quarters of other fabrics which compliment and contrast with your background(s).  You will be able to make two blocks for every fabric you choose (so if you want to make 16 blocks, you will need 8 fabrics, plus background).  In class we will work from one square of each and you will need some of the rest of the fat quarter to finish your top later.
  • Although we will only use about 8 fabrics plus your background(s) in class, feel free to bring more to establish your palette for making more blocks.

306 Batik the Easy Way

Batik the Easy Way

Judy
Tipton Rush

All-Day Class
$75

Always on the hunt to find new and interesting techniques to add excitement and interest to my artwork, I stumbled upon a way to get the traditional look and feel of Indonesia Batik but not having to use dyes and hard to remove paraffin wax.  Instead, one can use food grade wax that easily melts with hot water and is environmentally safe.  Paints and ink readily available (and already in my tool kit) are used instead of dyes.  The ability to use less dense fabrics means quilting by hand or machine is easier.

The techniques are fun and easy and virtually everyone can do it.  In class we will explore several design ideas.  Come and play in your world of imagination and explore and expand your skills and add to your “tool box”.

Class Tuition: $60
Supply Fee: $15 - includes fabric, soy wax, use of tools and paints to complete several small projects
